Environmental Science
Are you concerned about global
warming? Greenhouse gases emitted to the atmosphere trap
heat and cause global warming. Some greenhouse gases come
directly from human activity, such as when we burn gasoline
to drive our cars or produce electricity, but there are also
many greenhouse gases produced in nature, such as by
respiration of plans or soils. This workshop will give you a
brief overview of climate change science, and we'll discuss
human-made and natural sources of greenhouse gases to the
atmosphere. We will measure C02 flux from soil as an
example.
Leader – Francesca Hopkins
Francesca Hopkins was born and raised in Sonoma County. She
attended Rohnert Park public schools, including Rancho
Cotate High School. She continued her studies at the
University of California Berkeley, graduating in 2005 with
the Departmental Citation in Environmental Sciences. After a
summer spent conducting research in the Amazon forest of
eastern Ecuador, Francesca began working at the Lawrence
Berkeley National Lab on Carbon Cycling and Climate Change
research.
